BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This short prayer is for the days around graduation, whether you are the graduate, a parent, a grandparent, a teacher or a friend who wants to bless someone reaching the end of one season and stepping toward the next. Pray it on the morning of the ceremony, the night before a big exam, or whenever the future feels larger than the present. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Graduation

Father, thank You for every step that brought us to this day. There were early mornings, long nights, hard assignments and moments when we wondered if we would finish. You were present in all of it, and we give You thanks for the people who helped us along the way: the teachers who believed in us, the friends who kept us going, and the family who showed up when we needed them most.

Now we look ahead, and it can feel both exciting and frightening. Give us wisdom to choose well in the decisions still ahead, whether that is a job, a school, a town or a calling we have not yet named. Keep us from measuring our worth by a diploma or a title. Remind us that our identity rests in being Your children, not in how the next chapter turns out. Steady our hearts when comparison creeps in, and help us trust that You have already gone before us. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for bringing us this far. We are grateful, and we are a little nervous about what comes next. Give us peace in this moment and courage for the road ahead. Guide our steps, keep our hearts humble, and help us remember that You are faithful in every season. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when the next step is unclear. Ask God to help you lean on Him rather than on your own sense of what the future should look like, and to make your path straight as you walk it day by day.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

Pray this for the graduate who is anxious about what comes after school. Thank God that His plans for His people are good, and ask Him to help you hold onto that truth when the unknowns feel heavy.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Read this as you look up toward what lies ahead. Ask for help from the Lord, who made heaven and earth, and let His steady presence settle the nerves that come with leaving something familiar.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this over the graduate’s growth. Thank God for the work He has already begun in your life and trust that He will carry it on, even when you cannot yet see how.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Use this verse to shape the goals you set. Ask God to help you live with justice, kindness and humility in your work, your relationships and the community you enter next.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the quiet of early morning, before the day’s noise begins. Sit somewhere you can be still, with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, and read the prayer slowly. Pause after each paragraph and let the words sink in before moving on.

If you are praying for a graduate, consider reading the prayer together over breakfast, in the car on the way to the ceremony, or in a short moment before the walk across the stage. You might also invite a grandparent, pastor or close friend to pray it with you, each person adding a sentence of their own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new room and every unfamiliar road. May He give you a clear mind, a kind heart and friends who encourage you to keep growing. May you know, in every season, that you are loved and held, and that the One who began a good work in you is faithful to finish it.
