This simple prayer for forgiveness is for the moment you know you have done wrong, or you feel the weight of something you cannot undo. You can pray it when you wake with regret, after a harsh word you wish you could take back, or when guilt keeps replaying in your mind. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own sins and sorrows into your own words.

Simple Prayer for Forgiveness

Father, I come to you honestly today. I have done things I am ashamed of, and some of them I have hidden even from myself. I have chosen my own way over yours, I have hurt people I love, and I have let pride keep me from saying I was wrong. I am sorry, and I do not want to make excuses anymore.

Thank you that you already know everything I am carrying. I ask you to forgive me, not because I deserve it, but because you are merciful and you have promised to receive those who come to you in humility. Wash away what I have done, and clean the places in my heart that have grown hard. Help me to receive your forgiveness and not keep punishing myself for what you have already covered.

Show me where I need to make things right, and give me the courage to take the first step. Soften the anger I have held toward others, and help me extend the same grace I have been given. Thank you for loving me when I am at my worst. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am sorry for what I did, and I know you see it clearly. Forgive me and cleanse me from this. Help me stop running from you and turn back to you now. Thank you that your mercy is new every morning, and that you welcome me again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 51:1-2

1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.

(WEB)

David begins his prayer of repentance by asking for mercy, not for a reason to feel better. Pray these lines slowly, letting each request for cleansing become your own honest request.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

This verse shows that confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing. Read it after you name your sin, so that you hear God’s answer as clearly as you spoke your own.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

When guilt keeps returning, this verse reminds you of how far God has removed your sins. Pray it when you are tempted to keep bringing up what God has already put away.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(WEB)

God invites his people to reason with him, and he promises that stained lives can be made clean. Use this verse to thank him for a cleansing you cannot earn.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

After a failure, the mercies of the Lord feel distant, yet this passage says they are renewed each morning. Pray it when you wake up carrying yesterday’s regret.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early in the morning or just before bed, and sit somewhere without distractions. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down anything God brings to mind. Many people find it helps to open their hands in their lap as they pray, as a physical reminder that they are letting go of what they have been holding.

You might also ask a trusted friend, pastor, or small group member to pray this with you, especially if the sin has affected someone else. Sometimes forgiveness takes shape when another believer stands with you and reminds you of God’s grace. Let them speak the words over you when you cannot find your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who is rich in mercy, wash you completely and remove every stain of shame. May he remind you that you are his child and that his love is not withdrawn because of your failures. May you rise from this prayer lighter, free to walk in his peace.
