BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This simple prayer for patience is for the moments when waiting has worn you thin: a delayed answer, a slow day with restless children, a diagnosis you cannot rush through, or a season where nothing seems to move. You can pray it in the morning to set the tone for the day, or in the middle of a frustrating moment when your jaw is tight and your patience is gone. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of ours.

Simple Prayer for Patience

Lord, you know how quickly I want things to be finished. I want the phone call to come, the bills to balance, the sick person to get well, and the tangle in my own heart to smooth out. Some days I lose my temper at small delays, and then I feel ashamed of how little I can wait. Forgive me for the sharp words I have said to people who did not deserve them, and for the times I have acted as though my timing were the only one that mattered.

Help me slow down enough to notice you in the waiting. Give me steady breath when my thoughts race ahead, and gentle words for the people who are slow or difficult or simply different from me. When I cannot see how something will work out, remind me that you see the whole road and I only see the next step. Let my hands be busy with what is in front of me instead of clenched around what I cannot control. Teach me to trust your timing more than my own schedule, and let me find some peace in the waiting.

I ask this in the name of Jesus, who was never hurried and never careless. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired of waiting and my patience is running thin. Slow my heart down right now. Give me one calm breath, and help me answer the next person with kindness instead of frustration. Show me what is right in front of me to do, and help me trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Paul connects suffering with endurance and hope. When you pray this passage for patience, ask God to use the hard waiting to shape something stronger in you than you could build by yourself.

James 1:4

Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

(WEB)

James describes patience as something that finishes its work. Pray that God would let your endurance grow all the way through, so you lack nothing you need for the long road.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

David speaks to himself here, telling his own heart to wait. Use this verse to talk to your own soul, and ask the Lord to strengthen your courage while you wait on him.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Patience appears in the list of the Spirit’s fruit, which means it grows as God works in you rather than as a result of willpower alone. Pray that the Spirit would cultivate this quality in your daily life.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises renewed strength to those who wait on the Lord. Pray this verse when you feel worn out, asking God to lift your energy so that waiting does not drain you dry.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you are likely to feel the pressure of waiting, such as the drive to work, the minutes before a difficult meeting, or the quiet after the kids are finally in bed. Sit or stand somewhere you can breathe easily, and keep one hand open on your lap or resting on a table. An open hand is a small, physical reminder that you are releasing your need for control. Pray the full prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it settle.

You might also pray this with someone else. A spouse, friend, or small group member can read it aloud while you listen, or you can take turns praying the lines together. Asking someone to pray for your patience can keep you honest when you are tempted to give up on waiting. If a particular person or situation is weighing on you, name them in the prayer and ask God to give you grace toward them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is never hurried give you steady strength for each day of waiting. May he meet you in the slow hours and the unanswered questions, and fill them with his nearness. May your heart grow quieter, your words grow kinder, and your trust in his timing grow deeper with every passing season.
