A prayer for a friend is a way of bringing another person’s needs before God when you may not know all the details, or when words feel hard to find on your own. You can pray it when you hear that a friend is struggling, when you are sitting with them in a hard season, or quietly in the morning as you think of them. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Friend

Father, thank you for the gift of this friend. Thank you for the laughter we have shared, the conversations that went late into the evening, and the ways you have used them to show me your kindness. Right now I bring them to you as they are, with all that is weighing on them. You see the worries they carry at night and the decisions they cannot seem to settle. Be near to them in the places where they feel most alone.

Lord, give them rest for their mind and steadiness for their heart. Where they feel afraid, remind them that you are not surprised by anything they are facing. Open doors that need opening and close the ones that would lead them away from you. Give them wise people around them, honest friends who will tell them the truth in love, and let them feel your presence through the people who show up for them today. Strengthen their body where it is tired and their spirit where it is thin.

I also ask you to work in me. Make me a faithful friend, patient with their pace and quick to listen before I speak. Show me what they need from me, even when that is simply to sit with them. And whatever happens next, let them know they are loved by you and by those who care for them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is carrying something heavy right now, and you know every part of it. Hold them close and give them the strength they need for this hour. Calm their fear, lift their weight, and let them sense that they are not walking alone. Help me to love them well today, with patience and with honesty. Thank you that you hear us even when we cannot find the words. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for a friend in the early morning, before the day’s demands begin, or in the quiet of the evening before sleep. Choose a place where you can be still, such as a favorite chair or a walk around the block. Holding a cup of tea or a small object that reminds you of your friend can help keep your attention focused on them rather than drifting to your own concerns.

If you know others who love this friend, consider praying the same words with them, or simply sharing with them that you are lifting your friend up. Praying together can strengthen both of you and help the friend feel supported by a whole circle of people who care. Keep a short note of what you have prayed so you can return to it and notice how God is answering over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friend and keep them in his care. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May they feel his peace settle over their days, and may the people who love them be a steady reminder of God’s faithfulness.
