BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This morning prayer is for the minutes before you walk into your workplace, whether that is an office, a shop floor, a classroom, a hospital ward, or your own kitchen table. Pray it while you are still getting ready, sitting in the car, or standing at the sink with your coffee going cold. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the day ahead.

Morning Prayer Before Work

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before the emails, meetings, phone calls, deadlines, and small interruptions begin, I want to give this day to you. You already know what is waiting for me. You know the difficult conversation I have been dreading, the project that feels bigger than my time allows, and the coworker whose tone wears on me. Help me remember that none of it is hidden from you, and that you are already present in every room I will walk into today.

Give me a clear mind as I start. Slow my thoughts when they race ahead to what might go wrong. Help me do my work with honesty and care, even when no one is watching and even when the task seems small. Where I am tempted to cut corners, to speak harshly, or to take credit that is not mine, steady my heart and turn me back toward what is right. Let me be someone my colleagues can trust. Give me patience with the people I work alongside, and the wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen. If I need help, let me ask for it without shame. If someone else is struggling, open my eyes to notice them.

Watch over my going out and my coming home, and keep my family and the people I love safe while I am away. Let my work today be an offering to you and not only a way to earn a living. Whatever goes well, let me give you thanks. Whatever goes poorly, let me bring it to you before I let it define me. I belong to you before I belong to any job, any title, or any outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading into my work day and I need you there with me. Guide my thoughts, steady my hands, and make me patient and honest with the people I meet. Help me do my best without carrying what only you can carry. Let me see you at work in the small moments as well as the large ones. Thank you that I am never working alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Ask God to let the work of your hands be established before you start. This verse turns ordinary tasks into something you can hold up to him, and it is a good line to repeat when you feel your effort is wasted.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Commit your plans for the day to the Lord before the first meeting begins. Praying this verse helps you hold your to-do list loosely, trusting God with the outcome rather than gripping it tightly.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the work feels thankless or dull. It reminds you that your labor matters to God, so you can do it with sincerity even if no one notices.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this verse aloud as the new day begins. Thank God for fresh mercies each morning, especially if yesterday went badly and you need a clean start.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Bring your worries about the day to God in prayer before they grow. This verse invites you to replace anxious rehearsal with specific requests and gratitude.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment that you can keep, such as while the kettle boils, during the drive, or just before you open your laptop. Pray with your hands busy if that helps you focus. Many people find it helpful to hold a cup, fasten a watch, or touch the car keys as a small signal that the day is being given to God. If you work at a desk, you might keep a note with the prayer taped near your monitor and read it once before your first task.

You can also pray this prayer with a spouse, a roommate, a child heading to school, or a friend who works in a similar field. Taking turns reading one paragraph each can make it feel shared, and you can ask one another what each person is facing before praying together. If you are a team leader, consider praying it briefly with your group before the first meeting, asking God to guide every conversation.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every meeting, task, and conversation today. May he give you clear thinking, honest words, and steady hands. May he keep those you love in his care while you are apart, and may you return home at the end of the day knowing you were never alone.
